MIAMI, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- A high-profile nursing shortage report released this week by the nation's hospital accrediting organization singled out the Florida International University School of Nursing (FIU SoN) as an example of what can be done to fill nursing schools with more faculty and students. The report, issued by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), cited that inadequate nurse staffing levels "have been a factor in 24 percent of unanticipated events that resulted in death, injury or permanent loss of function."
In the section of the report that addressed nursing education, the FIU SoN was highlighted as an example of what can be done, beyond federal funding, to fill nursing schools with both faculty and students. The report cited private sector partnerships that the SoN has forged with area hospitals to fund nurse faculty positions and specific education programs, such as a nurse anesthetist program and a program to prepare foreign-trained physicians to become nurses. The report also cited the SoN's recruitment campaign that is targeting South Florida high school students.

Following are brief summaries of programs in place at FIU to expand the number of nursing faculty and nursing students. Dr. Divina Grossman, Director of the School of Nursing, and other expert spokespersons are available at FIU to discuss these and other nursing shortage issues and solutions. Reach out to students at the high school level and attract them to nursing careers, with a focus on minority groups currently underrepresented in the nursing profession, through the P.R.I.D.E. Project: Pre-entry, Recruitment, Individualized, Diversity Enhancement. Edison Senior High School in Miami and Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale are among the high schools involved.
Tap an underutilized source for qualified nurses: foreign physicians who are not licensed in Florida. In May 2002, 40 foreign physicians began this unusual baccalaureate program at the FIU SoN, and another 40 will begin in September.
The program is supported by four Florida hospitals to prepare foreign- trained physicians to become nurses: Catholic Health East's Mercy Hospital, HCA's Kendall Medical Center, Cedars Medical Center in Miami, and Aventura Hospital. More than 450 physicians have applied for the program; most are from Cuba, Haiti, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Reach out to students in their first years of college and attract them to four-year nursing education programs. Once such program is the Baptist Health Systems-FIU Scholarship Program to attract students into the BSN program.
Fund needed faculty positions and attract more PhD-level nursing faculty, with the help of area hospitals and other non-federal funding sources.
Meet specific community needs, through partnerships such as the one with Mercy Hospital in Miami for the development of a specially designed LPN to BSN program, and the one with Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach for a masters-level nurse anesthetist program.
About The FIU School of Nursing
The establishment of the FIU School of Nursing in 1982 came as a direct response to the acute nursing shortage at the time. Start-up funds were provided by nine Miami hospitals to institute a program that would provide men and women interested in nursing with a baccalaureate nursing degree. Today, the multi-campus School offers a generic Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, RN to BSN programs for registered nurses wishing to complete their baccalaureate degree and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program with specialties in Advanced Child, Adult, Family and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, as well as an MSN Nurse Anesthetist program. The School is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), the Florida State Board of Nursing and the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. It is part of Florida International University, which is ranked among the top 100 public national universities by U.S. News & World Reports.
