3 Things You Can Do Today to Boost Your Job Search

If you are currently looking for a new job, you know how frustrating the job search can be. It is easy to get discouraged when your search is proving fruitless. However, there is always more you can do to improve yourself as a job seeking candidate. Here are three tasks you can complete today in order to better your chances of landing your dream job.

1. Optimize your LinkedIn profile. If you already have a profile, great- but is it as strong as it could be? If you’ve only included the bare minimum required on your profile such as name, job title, and job history, it could be hurting your job search. Most recruiters use LinkedIn to find candidates for open positions, and you want to ensure that your profile is optimized for recruiters to not only find you, but also to compel them to reach out.

It’s important to have a clear and concise summary and headline, a professional photo, and a complete skills section. You may also want to follow influencers in your industry and join relevant groups. 2. Quantify your resume and add action verbs. You most likely already have a resume that you’ve put time and effort into creating, but, does it really showcase everything you have accomplished? Rather than using words like “responsible for” or “oversaw”, I recommend adding action verbs to your resume to show a potential employer what you are capable of and how you have demonstrated it.

Words like produced, engineered, launched, conserved, reduced, expanded, acquired, redesigned, etc. are strong action verbs that show you accomplished something meaningful. Check out this list of 185 powerful action verbs to get ideas. I also recommend adding numbers to your resume and quantifying your experience. How much money did you raise? How many social media followers did you acquire? Numbers are a powerful tool to display your accomplishments on your resume.

3. Set up a networking meeting. Networking meetings are a great way for you to connect with someone in your desired field who can provide information and offer advice about a certain job, industry, or company. To begin, make a list of your dream companies and organizations, and see if you can find a relationship to anyone who works there. For example, you could reach out to someone who went to the same college or high school as you. You can also check on LinkedIn to see if you have connections in common with any employees at that company. Reach out with a friendly invitation to grab a coffee and chat- you never know who may be willing to offer mentorship.

The point of these meetings is to build a relationship, not necessarily to land a job right then and there. However, the person you meet may be able to help you in the future by telling you about a job opening at their company or even referring you for an open position. Regardless, what you learn from a networking meeting could help you at future networking events and give you a leg up in actual job interviews.
