LinkedIn is one of the most common tools recruiters use when searching for candidates. As you can imagine, it can be quite time consuming to sift through all the LinkedIn profiles we come across when looking for a particular type of candidate. There are several things you can do to make your profile stand out to a recruiter and avoid getting lost in the sea of candidates out there. Even if you are not actively searching for a new job, you never know when a recruiter may be searching for someone like you for a great new opportunity, so it works in your favor to have a profile that really stands out. Here are five ways to stand out to a recruiter on Linkedin:

  1. A professional photo. Your photo is a recruiter’s first impression of you. Your photo should be clear and professional. A profile without a photo simply does not stand out and I am much less inclined to click on it than one with a friendly face attached. Think of it as putting a face to a name.
  1. A complete and specific profile. We rely on the details of your profile to determine if you are a suitable candidate, so be sure to include as much detailed information on there as possible. Use numbers and figures to quantify your experience. For example, how many team members you manage, how much revenue you have driven, or what size budget you oversee.
  1. A well-written headline. Your headline is the text that appears under your photo, and can really help set you apart when a recruiter is looking through a list of profiles. The default headline on Linkedin is your current position and company, however in order to stand out more you can try incorporating some creative keywords. It is important to strike a balance between informative and creative- make sure a recruiter can understand exactly what it is you do. Sometimes the photo and headline are all a recruiter will see so you want to put the correct relevant information there.
  1. A complete “Skills” section. Listing specific skills will help you stand out if a particular position requires certain expertise. For example, Web Development, Event Planning, Market Research, Software engineering, etc. List as many skills as possible since they act as keywords that will strengthen your chances of showing up in a recruiter’s search.
  1. A personal touch. I suggest including a hobby, volunteer work, affiliation, or interest on your profile to help differentiate you from the crowd. I will often use candidates’ hobbies as a way to remember them.

While incorporating these tips into your profile, it’s most important to remember that your goal is to make a positive, lasting impression. You can accomplish this by being clear, honest, interesting, and straightforward. You want to ensure that a recruiter can understand what it is you do and how you do it based on the information you provide.
